EH Research Releases Results of Annual Custom Electronics Product Purchase and Market Sizing Survey
Framingham, MA – December 9, 2009 – EH Research/CE Data, a division of EH Publishing, Inc., announced today the results of its most recent Product Purchase and Market Sizing Study, a survey conducted annually to gather information about the home technology product purchase history of custom electronics dealers, installers and integrators. Results of the directly-collected survey information are extended to develop an estimate of the size of the overall custom electronics market, as well as approximations of the value of product purchased for each of the following 25 specific product categories:
In-Wall/Ceiling Speakers • Floor/Shelf (freestanding) Speakers • A/V Receivers, Amplifiers & Pre-amps • Multiroom Audio Distribution • Media Servers • Audio & Video Cable • Plasma Flat-Panel TV's • LCD Flat-Panel TV's • Front Projectors • Video Film Screens • Racks • Mounts & Lifts • Power Conditioning/Power Quality/Surge Suppression • Home Theater Furniture • Home Theater Seating • Acoustical Treatments • Whole House Automation Systems • Lighting Controls • Window Covering Controls • HVAC Controls • Universal Wireless Remote Controls • Central Vacuum Systems • Security Systems • Structured Wiring Systems
The 'bottom line' survey findings – combined with an estimate of the number of dealer/installer firms currently actively doing business in the custom electronics market sector – showed that approximately $5.513 billion worth of home technology product was sold into the custom electronics channel over the course of 2009. EH Research estimates that the total size of the custom electronics installation/integration market – incorporating approximations of revenue realized from the resale of product, programming and installation labor charges, recurring service fees and dealer profit – reached a level of almost $14 billion during 2009.
Home systems installers/integrators providing information about their product purchase history had median revenues of $639,000. “Survey respondents told us that they spent the most this year on flat-panel TVs, whole–house automation/integration systems, multi-room audio distribution equipment and A/V wire & cables” said Daryl Delano, the Director of Research for EH Publishing, Inc.
Evidence of the nascent economic recovery was captured in this year’s survey. Respondents were modestly more optimistic about growth opportunities in the year ahead for their company (and, implicitly, also about growth trends for the overall custom electronics market channel) in this survey than when the survey was last conducted in October of 2008. At the time of last year’s survey, 18.7% of companies expected that their total revenue would be lower in 2009 than in 2008 (up dramatically from a negligible 2.1% of respondents just two years earlier who had expected an over-the-year decline in sales revenue). Responses to this year’s survey, however, show that only about half this number – 9.6% -- expect for their total revenue to be lower in 2010 than in 2009. At the same time, about 28% of firms look for their 2010 revenue to be up 10% or more from the disappointing level of this year.
With tabs on geographical regions of the United States as well as by annual sales revenue of installation companies, the study results will be useful to companies currently providing products, services and/or funding to custom electronics installation businesses, as well as to companies that are contemplating entry into one or more of the various segments of this fast-growing market.
